The digital age has made ebooks extremely popular, so many are now downloaded to a digital device such as a Kindle, Smartphone etc. on a daily basis and the process now goes full circle, as the writing process now begins from a digital device, but what device should you use? What is the best laptop for writers?

If you are interested in writing an ebook to earn an extra income but are not sure where to begin we have a whole section dedicated to writing books here.

THE 5 BEST LAPTOP FOR WRITERS

To save you a bunch of time we have put together 5 laptops that can suit your budget as well as your requirements.

We have suggested standard Window laptops along with Chromebooks. Not sure what a Chromebook is? Well,  I am using one now to type up this article and have also written several ebooks on one, I think they are great! Basically, a Chromebook is built around the Google operating system called Chrome OS, they primarily run as a web-based browser around Google’s main products such as Gmail, Drive, Chrome browser etc, this can put people off from using them as you do of course need an internet connection to access these types of software but think about it logically, when using a Windows laptop what will you look to do on there? Access the internet? Download documents? Upload documents? Send and receive email?  Well, you will need an internet connection to do all that type of stuff as well! So in my mind, there is not a great difference between a Chromebook and a Windows laptop in terms of what you would use it for and how you can use it.

When you first set up a Chromebook you just need to enter your Google email and password and that’s it! You can start using the Chromebook straight away, no need to run any software. If you do not have a Google email account you sign up for when you first power up the Chromebook.

This video from Jims Reviews on YouTube does a great job in explaining what a Chromebook is:

If you are looking to write an ebook using a Chromebook you can easily use Google’s own version of Microsoft word, called Docs from their Drive app. It works just like Word and you can also use it in Off-Line mode, when you then get an internet connection the software updates what you have entered through the cloud.

You never need to click on save when typing in Google Docs, auto save is enabled and this feature means that your work is always being saved as you type, so you never need to worry about losing your work.

This video runs you through using Docs on Google Drive:

I do love Google Products, I love the way that I can access my account from any computer that I use, I just need to log in with my email address and password to access all my documents. Very simple and I can even do it from my mobile phone!

You might prefer to stick to what you know and perhaps you have already owned Windows based Laptops and PC’s in the past, millions of people have off course and the software is still a staple for a vast number companies around the world, Microsoft have done a great job with Windows 10, the software now feels modern and user friendly.

If you are new to Windows this video runs explains more about Windows 10, which is the latest software available:

And if you are looking to use Microsoft Word to write your ebook this video gives you more of an idea about using the software for your writing process:

Perhaps Windows Laptops will be best for you? Perhaps a Chromebook will be better for you? The choice is off course yours but either way you will have no problems with writing an ebook on either type of hardware using either piece of software.

Ok, lets run through 5 of the best laptop for writers !

In terms of this laptop, it is what you would expect for the price. Even though it does have a full HD screen, the screen does tend to have a bit of glare, possibly because the brightness is a bit low. It is very lightweight, so it would be great for travel. The best part of this computer is the keyboard and track pad. They seem like they should be on a more expensive laptop. The fan on the computer is very quiet which is nice so it does not distract you when are you are trying to work. It also has a replaceable battery which is great in case you are using your laptop somewhere without an outlet, so you can bring back up batteries with you. The speed is what you would expect for a 4 GB RAM. It works well for general web browsing, but for anything else, for example, gaming, it may run a little slow.

This computer is great for anyone who needs to do any basic laptop tasks, such as browsing the internet, streaming videos, or checking email. This computer would not be great for a video gamer. One great thing about this computer is the full HD screen, but occasionally does have a bit of a glare. The battery lasts about 3-4 hours when in use. Overall, it is a very easy to use and functional computer

This computer is very useful and versatile Chromebook. It is very light and the battery last a long time. This really helps out with travel. Another great thing is the Chrome App store. You can download all kinds of apps for your Chromebook to help make it more productive. This laptop has two USB ports which is great if you want to use a mouse and plug in another device to your Chromebook at the same time. One issue I do have is with the speakers. They are on the front of the Chromebook which causes a little bit of muffling to the sound. By far the best part is the speed. It is very quick to load any web page.

For its intended purpose, this really is a great laptop. It has a long battery life and a very fast browser. As long as you don’t need to download any specific software, it works great, remember that you cannot download any software on a Chromebook, so if that is what you need then look elsewhere. One issue with the laptop is the build of it, it does tend to feel a bit flimsy at times.
