I really wanted to speak to Alex Genadinik for two reasons, firstly he was on pretty much every main platform on the internet, Udemy, Kindle, YouTube etc. and that meant he must be extremely hard working, and the 2nd reason was purely down to the fact that I wanted to know how he has found the time to dominate the internet this way?
Alex must be the hard working person that I have been fortunate to speak to in the “Success Stories” articles so far, he is a very inspiring person to speak to, once you realise what he has accomplished on so many platforms you immediately ask yourself “How can I achieve more?”
I would like to be more like Alex.
Lets here from the man himself via one of his 800 (yes EIGHT HUNDRED!) Youtube videos:
I think we can all learn a LOT from Alex, so let’s get to the interview!
PLEASE CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND
My name is Alex Genadinik. I was born in Odessa, Ukraine and grew up in San Francisco California. I finished high school during the tech boom of the 90s, and started working in the tech industry from the age of 18. I later got a Computer Science degree from San Jose State University, and worked as a software engineer. I had many business ideas of my own that I worked on during the time I had a job, but because I had little business experience, many of my initial ideas failed. As I gained experience, I began to create products that were more successful.
In 2012 I made my first mobile apps which ended up being successful. Those apps helped entrepreneurs. After the apps I wrote books for entrepreneurs, made a YouTube channel, began coaching people and also made premium video based content. This is how the business I have today got started.
YOU ARE ON SO MANY DIFFERENT PLATFORMS ON THE INTERNET, YOU HAVE YOUTUBE CHANNEL, FIVERR GIGS, YOUR OWN WEBSITE, UDEMY, YOU OFFER COACHING SESSIONS, APPS, KINDLE EBOOKS…WOW! SO, HOW DID YOU LEARN ALL THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO BE SO GOOD AT ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS?
As professionals, we have to keep learning new skills. That’s what I did. I didn’t start on all those things at once, but every year I used to start one or two new initiatives, stuck with them, and eventually made them work for me. I started with apps in 2012, YouTube in 2013, books in 2014, Fiverr in 2014, Udemy shortly after, and so on. If you look at all of it at once, it might seem like a lot, but I just kept trying a few things a year, and sticking with things that were working.
HOW MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF INCOME STREAMS IN TOTAL DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
Udemy and other online course websites
Private clients, I help with marketing
Ads on my website
DO YOU STILL HAVE A DAY JOB ON TOP OF EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO?
Thankfully no, and I could not be more thrilled about that.
DO YOU HAVE A SET DAILY ROUTINE? YOU MUST HAVE TO FIT SO MUCH INTO ONE DAY!
Because I do so many different things, it is hard to have a routine. What I do is make a plan for the year from which I set goals for each month. Based on my goals for each month, I create a plan for each week and at the start of each week, I create a plan for each day before those days start.
My goal is to focus on a few things per day, but focus on them really well. Singular focus helps me be productive and get through things quickly and move on to other things I need to work on.
It also helps me that a big part of my business is automated.
DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
No, but I’ve created a big network of peers to whom I can reach out with questions.
OUT OF THE INCOME STREAMS YOU HAVE, WHAT AVENUE IS THE MOST PROFITABLE?
Udemy is the most profitable at the moment. Here are all my Udemy courses: https://www.udemy.com/user/alexgenadinik
And here is a page with discounts to most of my best Udemy courses:
My second best-earning income stream are my books. Here is a page where you can learn more about my business and marketing books:
AND WHICH PLATFORM HAVE YOU HAD THE GREATEST SUCCESS WITH IN TERMS OF REACHING PEOPLE? E.G. KINDLE DOWNLOADS, YOUTUBE VIEWS ETC.
My apps have between one and two million downloads, and my YouTube channel has between one and two million downloads so those are the highest volume platforms at the moment.
IS YOUR MARKETING APPROACH TO TRY AND FUNNEL VIEWERS FROM YOUTUBE, READERS OF YOUR BOOKS ETC TO YOUR WEBSITE TO SECURE SALES OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES?
I mostly focus on “platform marketing” where platforms are Udemy or Amazon, and I get my books and courses to be recommended by their algorithms as much as possible.
The content marketing from YouTube is actually a much smaller focus for me. I prefer to focus on platforms which drive direct commerce.
HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU CONSIDER SEO? OR BECAUSE OF ALL THE PLATFORMS THAT YOU FEATURE ON IS SEO NOT OVERLY IMPORTANT TO YOU?
SEO is my main marketing strategy. I think about SEO broadly. Amazon, YouTube, Udemy, app stores and Fiverr all have SEO because most of the people who find me there find me through searching on those sites.
YOUR BUSINESS APP HIT NUMBER ONE IN THE GOOGLE PLAY STORE, DID THAT TAKE A LOT OFF MARKETING TO ACEHIVE?
Yes and no. Lots of marketing is done during the business planning and product creation. If you position your product intelligently and make the product very good, it will trigger all the right points to rank well in the app stores. Most of my apps can be found on my website http://www.problemio.com
HOW MANY HOURS DOES IT TAKE FOR YOUR MAKE, EDIT AND PRODUCE A YOUTUBE VIDEO OR UDEMY COURSE? HOW MANY VIDEOS AND COURSES HAVE YOU NOW CREATED?
I have 104 courses at the moment, and 800+ YouTube videos. But many of those were duds I created on my way to figuring out how to make good videos and courses.
A good video or course should be well planned. After that, it is less than a day to make a video and less than a week to make a good course – unless they are very detailed or technical. Then it would take double or triple the time necessary.
DO YOU OUTSOURCE ANY OF YOUR WORK?
I outsource design and basic repetitive marketing tasks.
DID YOU HAVE ANY FAILURES AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR ENTREPREUNAL JOURNEY?
Yes, with everything I’ve built, I had fallen flat on my face in the beginning. Even with Udemy, in my first 8 months I was struggling. Most people would have just quit. But I stuck with it, and powered through my failures and turned many of them around.
WHICH PLATFORM DID YOU SEE THE QUICKEST SUCCESS ON?
It took me time to succeed with all of them. I never had quick success out of the gate.
WHAT TIPS WOULD GIVE TO OUR READERS WHO ARE LOOKING AT WAYS TO EARN AN EXTRA INCOME?
Don’t try to make a quick buck. That will lead you to make short sighted choices that won’t lead to a great long-term business. Focus on creating quality products, learn how to promote them well, and you will succeed long-term.
WHAT ARE YOU PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
I am excited about 3d printing and selling products I can make.
